What is a Peer Leader?
A peer leader co-instructs a section of LA 105—Higher Education: A New Experience with a highly qualified CUW faculty or staff person. The two partner in a dynamic and strategic way in order to maximize classroom learning.
Peer leaders have typically attained junior or senior status, profess a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, fully support the mission of Concordia University Wisconsin, possess strong communication skills, are excellent students, and are genuinely interested in helping freshmen succeed.
Responsibilities vary from section to section, depending upon the skills and experience of the peer leader and the personality of the faculty or staff co-instructor. Here are some typical peer leader tasks:
- Meet regularly with your co-instructor to discuss students and lesson plans
- Arrive 5 minutes early to class to talk with students
- Take turns opening class with prayer
- Co-instruct the course; at times you will be the leader instructor!
- Send, receive, and grade e-mail journals
- Write and grade the midterm and final exam
- Participate in the service project
- Be available outside of class to help students with any problem they might have, building relationships whenever possible
For their efforts, peer leaders may choose to earn 3 academic credits or be compensated at a 1-credit equivalency, which in the Fall of 2005 was $720.
