LA 105 SERVICE PROJECTS

In Mark 10: 35-45 we read the compelling account of when James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Jesus with their request to sit at His right and left side, positions of power and prestige, in His "glory."  To which our Lord responded:

"You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be the slave of all. For the Son of Man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."

Jesus, the very Son of God, came to this earth for two reasons, to SAVE us and to SERVE us. Now He calls us to do two things: to BELIEVE in His saving work on the cross and to SERVE Him and others.

Concordia?s mission statement affirms this calling: "Concordia University Wisconsin is a Lutheran higher education community committed to helping students develop in mind, body, and spirit for SERVICE to Christ in the Church and the world." Accordingly, all students who take LA 105 will participate in a service project.

Service Learning

Many of you may be required by your LA 105 instructor to engage in service learning. The National Service Learning Clearing House defines service learning as an activity that "engages students in thoughtfully organized service activities that enhance learning outcomes while also strengthening communities."

Service learning enables students to formally reflect upon their service. In so doing it is hoped that students will internalize the experience to such an extent that they will more likely engage in future service activities. Service learning targets the affective domain. Service learning enriches individuals and communities. It is all about helping those in need. In other words, we want to cultivate servant hearts!

This educational experience takes many forms. In LA 105 it will likely mean researching your particular service organization to ascertain its history, purpose, core values, needs, etc. Additionally, you may be asked to write a reflection paper upon completion of your service in which you consider the personal implications of the exercise. A class presentation may also be required.  At any rate, your LA 105 instructor will provide all the specifics.

"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me."  ---JESUS (Matthew 25:40)
