Sunday School Teachers Study the Word at Brookfield Lutheran Church
South Wisconsin District Sunday school teachers enjoyed a seminar sponsored by Concordia Bible Institute on Saturday, January 15, 2005, at Brookfield Lutheran Church. The program resulted from an appeal by pastors and educators for continuing education for Lutheran teachers. The nineteen participants included Sunday school and day school teachers, Bible study leaders, church workers, a pastor, a Moms? Group leader, and other members of local LC-MS churches.
Rev. Dr. John Saleska, Director of Concordia Bible Institute, began and ended the day with in-depth study of the Scriptures. Rev. Dr. Dan Paavola, Assistant Professor of Theology and Assistant Director of Lay Ministry at Concordia University Wisconsin, contributed lessons entitled How to Write the Classroom Devotion and How to Pray Aloud with Confidence.
What I liked about the seminar is that it covered many questions I had about the Bible, about how to study the Scriptures and better understand it. Now I have a better grasp of the Bible, said Heidi Then, a Sunday school teacher and Moms Group leader at Divine Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hartland. I love to hear the story of Jesus and learn about God's Word. Dr. Saleska does a wonderful job explaining God's Word and sharing Martin Luther's perspective. I used the information I gained when I taught a Sunday school class for three-and four-year-olds. You could see the excitement in the children's eyes when I was teaching them about baptism, Heidi said.
Heidi also shared the information she learned during Dr. Paavola's session on prayer: "I told a couple friends about how to combine prayers together for family, friends, or strangers. My friends really appreciated learning how to pray for others with ease."
The half-day seminar in January was a preview of Teaching the Word, a three-day intensive course designed for Lutheran educators at all levels. Teaching the Word will be offered in August at Concordia University Wisconsin. Contact the Concordia Bible Institute at 262-243-4577 directly for additional information about its programs.
