Course Description
NURS 331 presents an overview of the medieval, early modern and modern periods in the history of Western Civilization, with particular emphasis upon U.S. history in the 19th and 20th centuries. We will examine the ways in which American and European societies over the centuries ordered themselves, in terms of their political, religious, social, economic, and cultural aspects.
In addition, this course will introduce students to the history of Nursing (both practice and education) as it developed within this larger historical context. Nursing is a comparatively recent profession; as a practice, however, nursing has much longer roots. Students will explore the development of nursing as a profession, beginning in the Middle Ages and ending with a brief look at issues affecting the profession in the early 21st century.
The goal of the course, then, is two-fold: first, to familiarize students with the history of Western Civilizationits basic chronology, major events and main themes; and second, to acquaint students with the history of Nursing, which developed into a profession over time in response to historical circumstances and social change.
NURS 331 fulfills the core requirement for History only in the BSN completion program.

Coursework
ESSAYS. Students will be required to write 3 short essays in response to questions posed by the instructor. The papers should be 3-5 pages long, typed, double-spaced, following APA format. The papers must advance a thesis, and should be based upon the assigned readings, lectures, and discussions. More specific criteria for the paper and writing tips are available on WebCT for this course.
QUIZZES. Students will also be subject to two types of quizzes that will be administered at every class session. 1) The chronology quiz will present a list of historical events or persons that the students must arrange in the correct chronological order. The first five quizzes will be completed by the students working in groups; the final chronology quiz will be completed by the students working individually. 2) The historical quiz will require the students to answer questions regarding material from the readings, lecture or discussion. The students will be allowed to use their text and/or notes, but must complete the quiz within a set amount of time.
CHAPTER PRESENTATION. Every student will be assigned a chapter of the book, American Nursing, to present to the class in order to open discussion. The student should provide a BRIEF written outline (ideally, one typed page) of the assigned chapter to the instructor and should overview orally the key points of the chapter for the class. The student is also encouraged to bring up points of interest encountered in the chapter in order to provoke discussion. The student will be required to develop discussion questions and to lead class discussion on the assigned chapter.
ARTICLE REVIEW. For their final project, students will write a review of an article relating to the history of Nursing. Specific criteria for the article review are available on WebCT for this course.
CONTRIBUTION. A students contribution to the class will be measured in a variety of ways: attendance (if you are absent, you cannot make a contribution); participation in small groups; and contributions to class discussions.
