Learning about our Master of Church Music Program from the internet provides important information, but misses the personal side of talking with someone and setting foot on a new campus. As one who has recently finished my doctorate at Northwestern University, I know firsthand the commitment you are contemplating. It looks daunting. You want to be sure of two things before you launch out into the deep: the education you will receive will be of the highest quality, and the environment in which you study and live will enable you to feel at home while you are working on the degree. I can assure you that both are true of our program.
The professors with whom you will study are of the highest caliber. Many are extensively published; many also serve as parish musicians, knowing the rigors of music ministry within a congregation. As such, they also know how to relate to people. They are personable as well as knowledgeable, understanding as well as intelligent.
The environment on campus during summers as well as the traditional school year is one of the program's great strengths. Faculty and staff work very hard to make accommodations comfortable and at-home. Students from a wide range of denominations, ages, and ethnicities band together quickly into a wonderful, supportive unit, helping each other academically as well as socially. Being away from home, family, and work for summer sessions is a huge sacrifice. Summer after summer I see students not only surviving, but also thriving because of the environment here at Concordia. The friendships made are lasting; the professional connections established are vital.
To be sure, this is a church music degree, and, as such, is taught from a Lutheran theological perspective. A strong, biblical base permeates the curriculum. Another of the great strengths of the program is the ecumenical make-up of the student body. Denominational perspectives shared by you in Hymnody, Issues in Church Music, Organ Literature, and Choral Conducting classes are welcomed and encouraged. They broaden everyone's perspective and make for richness in learning.
I would be pleased to answer any questions you may have about the program, put you in touch with one of our graduates, and meet with you personally if you would like to come to campus for a tour. I'm proud of the program and sold on it. Blessings as you consider being a part of the Master of Church Music program here at Concordia.
