In a contemporary European art competition an empty room with blinking lights is awarded the highest honor. In a rural American classroom children are instructed in the manufacture of simulated tribal masks using construction paper. A human activity that is centered upon the making of meaning frequently appears meaningless.

What does it mean to teach art in the 21st century?

In the 19th century John Ruskin wrote: "the teaching of art is the teaching of all things." It still is.

In the lives of children, art is not about the manufacturing of refrigerator decorations nor is it an effort to mimic the work of adult artists. It is rather the result of an innate impulse to generate form in response to sensation, to fashion thought in a form accessible to themselves and to others. In short, it is the urge to narrative, the compelling drive for language that is at work visually as well as vocally. All educators, not just those engaged in the visual arts, need to consider the ways in which that drive might be nourished.
