COUN 506/806/EDG 506/806 GROUP DYNAMICS AND
LEADERSHIP 3 CREDITS
This course applies concepts of small task-oriented group communication to the life/work experiences of participants, emphasizing both micro and macro leadership skills.
COUN 511 ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER: ITS
EFFECTS ON FAMILIES 1 CREDIT
This course will examine the effects of ADD/ADHD on families and how these families develop strategies for coping with a special needs child. Emphasis will be placed on current understanding of ADHD in children and adults and how helping professionals can be better prepared to deal with these special needs.
COUN 512 PSYCHOPHARMOCOLOGY 1 CREDIT
This course will provide a thorough overview of the medications and the rationale for their use in the helping professions. Emphasis will be placed on the major categories of medications, with case overviews outlining the process of making the best possible referral.
COUN 513 THE IMPACT OF CURRENT LEGISLATION ON
THE COUNSELOR 1 CREDIT
This course will examine the effect of the current laws (ADA, IDEA and section 504) on both schools, community agencies and the role of the counselor. An overview of the current laws, along with how the law is implemented into practice will be explored.
COUN 514 DECISION MAKING SEMINAR 1 CREDIT
The purpose of this course is to give the students the opportunity to interact with counselors in the field. This course is intended to have discussion involve licensure and certification concerns and procedures, national examination procedures, tips for interviewing and seeking out job openings. This course will also focus on current topics for new counselors from the perspective of recent graduates of the CUW program.
COUN 515/EDG 515 EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH
METHODS 3 CREDITS
Examines the research tools available to design, implement, and evaluate the formal study of the educational process. The course includes the study of descriptive and experimental research methods and elementary statistical methods, as well as techniques of literature review and report writing.
COUN 516 CONCERNS FOR THE ADOLESCENT 1 CREDIT
The purpose of this course is to give students an overview of the concerns of the adolescent. Issues discussed may include: pregnancy, self-esteem, peer relations, career decisions, eating disorders, suicide, and issues and dating. Students will gain an understanding of how the counselor can facilitate a counseling relationship with the adolescent and his/her family.
COUN 517 GRIEF AND ITS EFFECTS 1 CREDIT
The purpose of this course is to give students an overview of the current views of grief. Discussion will focus on how grief effects the family, school, and workplace. Students will gain an understanding of how the counselor can facilitate the grieving process with the client.
COUN 521/821/EDG 521/821 HUMAN LEARNING AND
MOTIVATION 3 CREDITS
A critical examination of the nature of contrasting psychologies of learning. Emphasis will be placed on major contemporary theories and their respective approaches to motivation. Student motivation will also be explored and emphasized.

ISSUES 3 CREDITS
A survey course of concepts and practices of modern counseling systems. This course not only provides historical perspectives of counseling, but it also presents the role and function of counselors in varied settings. COUN 550/850 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY 3 CREDITS
Social Psychology is the scientific study of the way in which people's thoughts, feelings and behaviors are influenced by other people. Interactions of an individual with one or more other individuals in social setting are analyzed. Social Psychology introduces basic concepts of small group behavior, communication, and development of attitudes. Required course for school counselor tract.
COUN 552/852 SOCIAL/CULTURAL FOUNDATIONS
IN COUNSELING 3 CREDITS
Social/cultural foundations of counseling is an exploration of different cultures and their impact on human behavior. The emphasis in this course is on the damaging effects to the mental health field that are caused by racial biases, especially those that exist between the counselor and the client. Social/cultural foundations focuses on strategies for effectively counseling individuals of other cultures. Required course for students pursuing school counseling and do not hold a current Wisconsin teaching license.
COUN 554/854 THEORIES OF PERSONALITY 3 CREDITS
A course focusing on various concepts of personality as addressed by theorists within the discipline of psychology and counseling.
COUN 561/861 CAREER COUNSELING FOUNDATIONS 3 CREDITS
This course refers to the life-long process of developing knowledge about the world of work. Skills and aptitudes, interests, personality characteristics, and beliefs and values are all important aspects of career counseling. Required course for school counseling tract.
COUN 562/862 CAREER COUNSELING TECHNIQUES 3 CREDITS
A companion course to Career Counseling Foundations. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of techniques which may be employed to lead or guide an individual toward an appropriate vocation.
COUN 564/864 CONSULTATION STRATEGIES 3 CREDITS
This course is designed to provide an overview of the consultation process and insight into the various roles that consultants may play. Theoretical approaches and principles of consultation, planned change, and organizational development will be discussed as well as counselors as consultants within the organization and within the community.

FAMILIES: A WORKING
RELATIONSHIP 3 CREDITS

COUN 572/872 INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS 3 CREDITS
This course includes an introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics including parametric, non-parametric techniques, correlation and ANOVA. Required for school counseling tract.
COUN 573 COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH 3 CREDITS
Community counseling is a survey of the areas in which counselors provide the community with much needed mental health services. The course provides a broad overview of the history of community mental health services and clarifies the distinctive role that community professionals play in their respective fields. COUN 576 INTRODUCTION TO NEUROPSYCHOLOGY 3 CREDITS
This course will introduce the student to the study of neuropsychology. Topics of discussion will include brain-behavior relationships, neuroanatomy, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological assessment.
COUN 580/880/EDG 580 FAMILY DEVELOPMENT 3 CREDITS
This course offers the student an opportunity to explore the development of the family. Various issues regarding family development are addressed through discussion of family development and family systems. The role of the helping professional will be discussed throughout the course in relation to the family and the needs of the family. COUN 581 MODELS AND METHODS OF FAMILY
COUNSELING 3 CREDITS
This course will offer the student opportunities to explore various schools of thought and treatment techniques related to the practice of family therapy. The role of the professional in diverse settings and with traditional and nontraditional families will be discussed throughout the course. Research on the effectiveness of working with families as well as the realities of the market place will be explored.
COUN 582/882 TRAUMA COUNSELING 3 CREDITS
This course affords the student the opportunity to learn how to work with victims and survivors of trauma. The student will discuss skills for dealing with trauma survivors and families and trauma victims. Topics will include: compassion fatigue, post-traumatic stress disorder, trauma in families, and trauma in children.
COUN 583 WORKING WITH CLIENTS FROM SPECIAL
POPULATIONS 3 CREDITS
The purpose of this course is to help students become familiar with various populations within the school, in the community, and how to work with these populations as a counselor. Special education populations in the school, and how the counselor can help these students function in society once out of school will be the primary focus.

Human development considers the adult life cycle, although development from birth to death will be covered as parents and children are considered in parallel. The individual will be treated holistically. The role of the individual within the family will be discussed. The emphasis will be on physical, psychological, and spiritual health.

CHILDREN 3 CREDITS
This course focuses on the nurturing of children. Special emphasis will be given to effective methods in child nurturing techniques. Discussion will center on building self-esteem, problem solving, motivation, and discipline. Infant through adolescent nurturing will be addressed.

The purpose of this course of study is to view how human and scientific aspects of normal/abnormal psychology converge in the world of clinical treatment. Students will gain an understanding of conceptual framework and alternative modes of treatment.

This course discusses the purposes, functions, types and principles of group counseling. The students will develop an understanding of and the ability to engage in and evaluate small group processes and relationships.

This course provides an opportunity for the student to pursue an area of particular interest as an independent study under the supervision of a University instructor.
