PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM

The Graduate Program at Concordia University is designed to prepare graduate students for leadership roles in professional education careers, specifically counseling. In today's society, we are confronted with many individuals that have concerns. These individuals often need to speak with a counselor to help them cope with and understand their life situation. It is our intent that Concordia University graduates would be trained in the counseling area to help them help others. We envision our graduates working in Lutheran and public schools, agencies and community at large, sharing their faith, their skills, and their trust in God. When applying to the counseling program here at Concordia, students have the option of picking from two educational tracks: school counseling and professional counseling. Upon completion of one of the two tracks graduates of the program will be eligible for certification as a school counselor through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and eligible to apply to the State of Wisconsin, Department of Regulation and Licensing as Professional Counselor.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COUNSELING DEGREE

  1. Demonstrate knowledge in the basic skill areas of counseling: assessment, consultation, counseling (career, individual, group), professional ethics and research.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of how and when to counsel people.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of resources available to church and community.
  4. Demonstrate ability to integrate faith with counseling skills.

Please Note:

E-Learning students must get in writing their state requirements for licensing (if living outside of Wisconsin) and submit it to Graduate Admissions upon applying to the program.
