ABOUT THE EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM

This specialty is designed to prepare teachers in early childhood education. This program will enable the student to strengthen his/her understanding of early childhood educational theory, improve understanding of human growth and development, and increase knowledge and expertise in the principles and practices of early childhood education.

Although many students in the program are teachers licensed by the State of Wisconsin, it is not necessary to be a licensed teacher to be accepted into the program.  Some students select the program to enhance their skills in career areas that are related to or supporting early childhood education.  This would include profit and non-profit programs in centers, Head Start programs, family childcare, after-school programs, and private and public kindergarten programs.  Students wishing to receive Wisconsin licensure may do this by taking additional undergraduate coursework in coordination with the required courses for the graduate program in early childhood education.

Throughout the program, students participate in portfolio-based assessment.  This is done in place of a comprehensive exam at the end of course work.

Classes are offered during evenings of the traditional semesters, Saturday mornings, and  in concentrated summer blocks.

This Program is offered only On-Campus.
