Why the CUW for Graduate Teacher Certification?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the admission requirements?

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a DPI certifiable major.  A licensable minor is optional.  A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 is required.

What materials are required to apply?

A complete application includes a one-page application, non-refundable $35 application fee, essay, resume, two recommendations and all official transcripts leading to your bachelor's degree.

An evaluation of transcripts must be completed to determine whether DPI requirements have been met in major and minor certification areas.  You must also submit a passing score on all three sections of the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST).

Is the program accredited?

Concordia is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.  The Graduate Teacher Certification program is approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as an alternative licensing program.

What are the DPI requirements that need to be met prior to applying for student teaching?

Students must receive a passing score on the PRAXIS II test (competency in major and minor areas of certification) and have completed the DPI required clinical hours in general education, multicultural education, special education and reading.

How long will it take to complete the program?

You will complete the certification course work in approximately 11 months. Each class is five weeks long, and meets one night a week from 4:30-8:30 p.m.  In addition, a full semester of student teaching is required.

How is the program structured?

The cohort based program combines a Master's Degree in Education with secondary education certification. This is a 34-35 credit program.

The first nine courses (25 credits) of the program are mandatory.  Following the nine required courses, you would take a 1-credit methods class in your major and/or minor and complete a full semester of student teaching. Students in a cohort work through the nine required courses together.

After completing the requirements for secondary education teacher certification, you have the option to complete a Master of Science in Education by taking nine additional credits. You have seven years from the time you began the teacher certification program to complete the full master's program.

How does the cohort program work?

A cohort is a group of students who complete an entire program of study together.  Concordia's off campus cohorts are held at various locations around Wisconsin, conveniently located to meet the needs of busy adults.

The courses within the cohort program are accelerated.  Students will complete each course in five sessions.  Each cohort will include a maximum of 20 students.  The small class size allows students to receive personal attention.

Classes are offered one evening per week during the school year plus a semester long student teaching experience.  The entire program will be completed at the off campus location.
