Concordia athletic director Rob Barnhill has announced that one of Concordia's best-known grads, Amanda Lorenzen, will be the new women's head track coach at CUW. “I am pleased to announce the promotion of Amanda Lorenzen to Head Women’s Track and Field Coach. Amanda is the most highly decorated student athlete in CUW history and continues to be among the Nation’s elite performers in the Steeple Chase. It is a tremendous opportunity for our young women to work along-side such an accomplished alum and a truly special young woman. I look forward to her continual professional growth and am excited about the positive contributions she will make to our track and field program.”
“I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to be the head women’s track coach," offered Amanda. I really enjoy my role on the team as the distance coach and now with the added responsibility of the entire women’s team I think that it will help mesh all aspects of the track program together.”
“Our short-term goal will be to win the Northern Athletics Conference championships again this indoor and outdoor season, explained Lorenzen. “As a head coach I will take on a larger responsibility in recruiting young women to join the team. It will be a fun challenge to seek out athletes who will work well on the team and who will also be positive additions to the CUW student body.”
“Our goal [Coach Walker and I], is to unify the team. With a separate coach for both the men’s and women’s team we see this as a way to fulfill every athletes need for a stronger coach/athlete relationship. The team will continue to practice, train, and compete together.”
“I expect that our athletes will continue to work hard, just as in the past, and will continue to reach higher standards as our team constantly becomes more competitive.”

MEQUON, Wis -- The Northern Athletics Conference released its annual list of conference scholar-athletes. An impressive 158 Concordia Wisconsin athletes were recognized for maintaining a 3.25 grade point average or higher this past academic year.
Overall, there were 907 full-time NAC student-athletes athletes from 13 colleges and universities who were honored. With 158 scholar-athletes, CUW comprised the most of any member institution in the conference, 17.4% of the overall acknowledged students. Of 313 Concordia student-athletes eligable for this award, over 50% maintained a 3.25 or higher grade point average this past academic year. This does not include football, men's and women's hockey, dance, cheer and wrestling, sports that were not recognized by the NAC last season.
"It is very gratifying to see the number of student athletes representing Concordia Wisconsin as NAC scholar-athletes. Internally we have long realized the tremendous talents that our student athletes possess athletically and academically," said Director of Athletics Rob Barnhill. "This public recognition of their talents is a just reward for all of their hard work and sacrifice."

MEQUON, Wis. -- The 2007 Concordia Wisconsin women's volleyball team not only had an outstanding year on the court this past fall, but also off the court. The American Volleyball Coaches Association recognized them for their work in the classroom. Head Coach Joe Cawley's team averaged a 3.30 gpa and was one of sixty-two division III schools that received this recognition.
In addition, Coach Cawley’s teams are familiar with this distinction, as this is the fourth consecutive year they have been acknowledged by the AVCA for team academics. CUW also joined Northern Athletics Conference members Edgewood College and Lakeland College on the AVCA all-academic team.
“I am happy to see that my team not only put the effort forward on the court but also in the classroom. I have always stressed to them that academics come first,” said Head Coach Joe Cawley. “There is a reason why they call them student-athletes; because the student comes first. Playing division III athletics is a privilege and I am grateful to have the chance to coach these fine young women.”
This past season Coach Cawley’s team made an impressive run towards a conference title with a 10-2 NAC record and a 23-10 overall mark, the most wins in a season for Coach Cawley. The Falcons finished in second place during the regular season and fell short in the NAC Tournament semi-finals to powerhouse Lakeland College.

Falcon Hoops Women lead the D. 3 Nation in GPA
ATLANTA - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its winners for the 2007-08 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll Monday. This award, given in NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA and Junior College/Community College, awards teams throughout the nation that carry the highest grade point averages (GPA) for the entire season based on the information submitted by WBCA-member head coaches.
"I would like to say congratulations to each and every one of these teams for producing some impressive cumulative grade point averages," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "These numbers would be notable for one student-athlete alone, but for an entire team to compile overall GPAs such as this is truly remarkable. I tip my hat to these programs and wish continued success both on and off the court."

Concordia University (Wisconsin) is making its debut at the No. 1 position on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll. The Falcons claimed back-to-back Northern Athletic Conference regular season titles and made a run at the tournament title this season, but fell short losing by just two points in overtime. Head Coach Stacey Brunner's club finished the season with 20 wins and just seven losses. The Falcons have a 43-11 record over the past two seasons.
"This is an outstanding accomplishment," said Brunner. "Like so many teams, we strive to be No. 1 off the court as well as on! I am so proud of our players for reaching this goal!"

CUW Coach (Former All American) Competes at U.S. Olympic Trials
MEQUON, Wis. – Current Concordia Wisconsin Assistant Cross-Country and Track & Field Coach Amanda Lorenzen competed at the highest level of her storied career. On July 3, Lorenzen participated in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase Finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Three days prior to competing in the finals, Lorenzen qualified with a time of 9:58.92, to become one of fourteen racers in this elite competition. During the finals of the 3,000-meter Steeplechase event, Lorenzen finished seventh overall. The top three runners advanced to the Olympics in Beijing, China. Lorenzen finished sixteen seconds off third and twenty-two seconds behind first place finisher Anna Willard.
While competing in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase event in Eugene, OR, Lorenzen set a personal record time of 9:49.74. Preceeding the Olympic Trials, Lorenzen’s personal record was 9:51.76. Training with Team Indiana Elite and Coach Robert Chapman, Lorenzen has steadily improved her time, enough to qualify for the Olympic Trials.
“Competing at these trials was amazing. Over 21,000 fans provided the encouragement that I needed to run with the top competition in the country,” stated Lorenzen. “There is a reason why they call it ‘Track Town USA’. It's because of the electricity that those fans provide.”
Throughout Lorenzen’s historic collegiate career, she captured countless trophies in the Lake Michigan Conference and in NCAA Division III National competitions. Throughout college, she attained numerous LMC Titles, before capturing the Division III National Championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and setting a national record time of 10:07.67.
During her senior year in 2006, she garnered the honors of NCAA Division III Female Track Athlete of the Year. Lorenzen owns the distinction of being the only Concordia Wisconsin athlete to receive such an honor.
“At this point in my running career, I was very happy with my seventh place finish in the Olympic Trials,” said Lorenzen. “I will continue to train with my coach and hopefully improve and finish even higher in four years. My goal is to run in the 2012 London Olympics.”
Concordia Wisconsin Director of Athletics, Rob Barnhill acknowledges, "Amanda Lorenzen is the most highly decorated student athlete in the history of Concordia Wisconsin and is most certainly a first ballot hall of famer. Having her participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials is an affirmation of the quality of the athletic programs here at Concordia Wisconsin. Amanda has been a positive ambassador as a student athlete and that continue in her role as an assistant coach."

Our most recent CUW All American
CUW sophomore Brock Solveson (Oconomowoc) set a J.J. Keller Stadium record in the Javelin (63.35 meters) in this year's NCAA DIII Track and Field Championships in Oshkosh, WI. Solveson became the second track athlete in CUW history to earn All- American honors at the outdoor championships.
Solveson's record (63.35 Meters) was tied later in the day by Stephen Burns (Rochester Institute of Technology). Both athletes battled in the finals only to see Burns earn the national championship based on having the second best throw during the competition (58.53 compared to 58.26 meters).
Soverson's throw also established a new CUW / NAC record, breaking one already owned by Solveson. The second place finish earns Brock the honor of being named a 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field All-American.
