Alternative Education
Dr. Jan Heinitz
Director of Alternative Education Certification Program
The Alternative Education License is an additional license for people who currently possess a teacher’s license from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Acknowledging that large and/or traditional school environments do not meet the needs of all students, the program is designed to work with teachers and school districts to develop programs that help all students become successful, including those who are at-risk, vulnerable or disengaged. For the student who has lost his or he way, this might include jail or detention-based education, credit acceleration, a behavior program or an opportunity to return to a traditional school.
Alternative Education License #952 is an add-on license that requires two classes: Educating Students at Risk and Alternative Education. Each of the courses is three credits and must be taken consecutively. Only six credits are required to complete licensing requirements.
