Master of Science in Education - Educational Technology

Dr. Bernard Bull

Director of Educational
Technology Program

The graduate degree in educational technology is designed to help you explore the nature of 21st century teaching and learning, integrate faith and learning, and reflect upon the implications of educational ministry in the digital world. As defined by the Association of Educational Communications and Technology, “Educational Technology is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources." The program exists to help individuals in schools and other learning organizations, including teachers, church workers, trainers and others committed to various aspects of learning, to serve as ethical, innovative and effective educational technology leaders. While we address the use and management of technology in portions of the program, our emphasis is upon learning design and facilitation.

Program Highlights

  • Students can complete the program through E-Learning.
  • While the program includes some technical elements, we focus on the use of technology to design effective and engaging learning communities.
  • The program challenges all participants to consider the implications of the Christian faith upon teaching, learning, technology, and ministry in the digital age.
  • E-Learning courses in the program promote active learning, group collaboration, and extensive use of a wide variety of web-based technologies. While some course options include a more independent learning format, this is not the norm in the educational technology program.
  • E-Learning courses do not require face-to-face attendance, but students are expected to log into their courses several times a week, playing an active role in the learning community.
  • The program is designed in partnership with the Ministry Technology Mentor (MTM) Project.

You will be immersed students in technology and you will learn to design and facilitate technology-rich learning, the primary focus upon the program is designing and facilitating 21st century teaching and learning.  Our program does not offer courses that teach you how to use a particular piece of hardware and software, nor do we attempt to create “techies.”  Instead, many of the courses will require that you learn how to use a wide variety of technologies in order to complete the course tasks.

Instructors will often share tutorials on specific software and hardware in order to help you develop competence and confidence with the ever-changing world of technology.  For those who aspire to be a technology coordinator or develop greater technical expertise related to school networks and technology support, we offer an elective called Networking, Support, and Delivery Systems for Schools.  With permission from the Educational Technology Program Director, you may be able to take additional technology-focused electives from the course offerings in the graduate information technology program at CUW.
