Philosophy

Mission Statement

The Philosophy Major at Concordia University Wisconsin prepares students to develop the implications of a Christian worldview in dialogue with major philosophical ideas.  Students will develop an understanding and appreciation for the insights of Classical, Modern and contemporary philosophy. They will learn to evaluate secular and religious philosophies in light of an informed Christian perspective. 

Goals

Upon completion of the Philosophy Major at Concordia University Wisconsin, students will be able to:

  • Define and distinguish important philosophical ideas and concepts;
  • Map the relationships (such as implication, consistency and inconsistency) between philosophical ideas and concepts;
  • Analyze and critically evaluate a philosophical worldview;
  • Defend or critique a philosophical position or worldview by developing a coherent argument;
  • Develop and defend their own ideas in critical dialogue with the contributions of others;
  •  Understand the similarities and differences between Christian teaching and various philosophical systems;
  • Defend the Christian faith from criticisms leveled by contemporary philosophers.
