Graduate assistants are full-time graduate students whose work substantially relates to and enhances learning in their program of study.
Graduate Student Employee
Graduate student employees are full-time graduate students whose work is of benefit to the university but is not substantially related to their program of study.
APPLICATION FOR GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS AND STUDENT EMPLOYMENT
- The prospective student shall make application for Admission into the Graduate School and shall make application for an established Graduate Assistant (GA) or Graduate Student Employee (GSE) position. Both admissions procedures may happen simultaneously; however, the position may not be awarded until the individual is accepted into the Graduate School and is registered as a full time student (refer to the GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP/GRADUATE STUDENT EMPLOYMENT POLICIES section as found below). The Handbook and Employment Application Form is included at the bottom of this page.
- Department personnel will review qualified applicants for the positions available each year which can be found using the CUW employment database The Falconry.

How do I apply for graduate assistantship student employment at Concordia University Wisconsin?
To apply for graduate assistantships or graduate student employment at Concordia University, you will need to submit the following materials:
- A cover letter expressing your interest in a specific position or all positions;
- acurrent resume;
- two letters of recommendation that speak to your intellectual ability and your work performance; and
- a completed Employment Application Form.
Appointments are contingent upon acceptance by the Dean of the School you are applying for.
When is the deadline for submitting a graduate assistantship/graduate student employment application?
Complete application information is due in the Career Services on per the date on the The Falconry posting. Applications received after the due date will be considered for any remaining vacancies. The files of applicants not offered positions are maintained in the pool for vacancies that may occur during the academic year. All applications in the pool become inactive the end of Spring Semester one year after the application deadlines.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP/GRADUATE STUDENT EMPLOYMENT POLICIES
Graduate assistantships and graduate student employment are available only to full-time graduate students admitted to a graduate program who are making satisfactory progress toward their degree, including a minimum overall 3.0 GPA. To be considered full time, a student must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits each term: fall, spring and summer. Graduate assistants and graduate student employees must be enrolled concurrently in courses for every term they are receiving a graduate assistantship/graduate student employment.
Departments and schools may set higher or additional standards. Students failing to meet these standards will not be granted an assistantship or graduate student employment. Graduate Assistants and Graduate Student Employees falling below minimum standards and not making satisfactory progress toward their degree will lose their position.
In accordance with Immigration and Naturalization Service regulations, successful applicants (non-immigrant alien) must be legal in status and have employment authorization prior to actual employment as a graduate assistant/graduate student employee.
Contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funds, an appointment may be continued beyond the initial year of employment. With some exceptions, graduate assistants may serve in that capacity for a maximum of two years.
Graduate Assistants and Graduate Student Employees are expected to work 20 hours per week (unless otherwise listed on the job posting).
Because Graduate Assistants and Graduate Student Employees often have access to student and university records, those employed in these positions are expected to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
COMPENSATION
Graduate assistantships and graduate student employees are typically expected to be compensated for working 20 hours per week for 16 weeks per semester (320 hours per semester) for three terms per year (Fall, Spring, and Summer), that is, a total of 960 hours.
Compensation consists solely of a cash stipend of $1,000 per month based on the 20 hour work week.
- The student is fully responsible for tuition.
- The graduate assistant or graduate student employee must make satisfactory progress toward graduation and carry a minimum of 6 credits during the semester he/she is in the program to be eligible to continue a Graduate Assistant or Graduate Student Employee.
Available vacancies in most departments will vary from year to year, as funding permits. Graduate students are required to apply for assistantships and employment each year unless he or she has been awarded a two-year assistantship.
