Dr. Janice Staral is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Social Work Department. In addition to her administrative duties, she teaches courses in social welfare policy, macro methods in social work, and a practice course in death and dying.

Dr. Staral received her Master in Social Work (MSW) in 1979 from the University of Michigan, with concentrations in medical social work and school social work, and earned her Ph.D. in Urban Studies in 1995 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her dissertation, "Signs of Hope and Struggle: Action Research in a Racially-Mixed Central City Church,” focused on the Urban Church and the church’s role in community change and collaboration. She is also a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).

From 1995-2007, Dr. Staral was an Assistant Professor at Marquette University in the Department of Social and Cultural Sciences.  She also practiced in a variety of social work areas including health care, schools, nursing homes, and in residential treatment with adolescents dealing with emotional disabilities.

Dr. Staral has published in the area of social work and spirituality, and in faith-based community organizing. She has also presented her work nationally at professional conferences.  Her research and teaching interests include social work and spirituality; community organizing/development; social welfare policy; health care policy/practice; urban change; and poverty/welfare reform.
