Dr Besch has been at Concordia University since 1995. His academic background includes a Bachelors Degree in American History from the University of Wisconsin, a Secondary Teaching Certificate also from UWM, a Masters of Business Administration Degree in Finance and Accounting from Keller Graduate School of Management, and both a Masters and a Doctorate in American History from Marquette University. Dr Besch's particular areas of study in history focus largely on naval and maritime affairs, though he also has a keen interest in industrial and technical history particularly as it concerns the automotive and railroad industries. Though the particular time frame of his historical research centers on the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as an avocation he enjoys the study of the Dark Ages in the British Isles. He has taught courses in Civil War History, American Foreign Policy, US Military and Naval History, Historical Methods, Western Civilization, and 20th Century World History. In addition to his interests in history, Dr Besch also has a deep background in business and has taught courses in finance, accounting, marketing, small business planning, and strategic planning . His list of publications and presentations includes a book on World War I Naval History, a presentation and paper on the History of the Japanese Mandate in the Pacific from 1920 - 1945, articles in automotive history journals, and numerous presentations at business conferences. In addition to his position at Concordia, he serves with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary where he is qualified crewman, instructor and vessel examiner.
Dr Besch resides in New Berlin with his wife Pamela. Together they have three children and seven grandchildren. His hobbies include boating, automobiles, reading, travel, hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting.
