  • God created the world to be sustainable
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth...God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.
    (Genesis 1:1, 31)
  • One result of the fall into sin is that the world's wholeness was lost.
Cursed is the ground because of you;...it will produce thorns and thistles for you. (Genesis 3:17-18 NIV)
  • God assigned the stewardship or caretaking of His creation to man, another of His creations:
"Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.' So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.' Then God said, 'I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground-everything that has the breath of life in it-I give every green plant for food." And it was so. (Genesis 1:26-31)

"You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive."
    (Genesis 6:19-20)

"You made [man] ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas."
    (Psalm 8:6-8)
  • God connected himself, humanity and the created world with a covenant:
"Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 'I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you-the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you-every living creature on earth'....And God said, 'This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth....Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.'"
    (Genesis 9:8-10, 12-13 NIV)
  • The Bible warns against greed and gluttony.
"Then [Jesus] said to them, 'Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions....Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes....For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.'" (
    Luke 12:15, 23, 34)

"But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have good and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."
    (1 Timothy 6:6-10)
  • A proper response is for creation to praise Him.
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands."
    (Psalm 19:1)

    Praise the LORD.

Praise the LORD from the heavens, praise him in the heights above.

Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars.

Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies.

Let them praise the name of the LORD for he commanded and they were created.

He set them in place for ever and ever; he gave a decree that will never pass away.

Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,

lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding,

you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars,

wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds,

kings of the earth and all nations, you princes and all rulers on earth,

young men and maidens, old men and children.

Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens.

He has raised up for his people a horn, the praise of all his saints, of Israel, the people close to his heart.

    Praise the LORD.
    (Psalm 148)

"when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy"
    (Job 38:6)

"Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy,"
    (Psalm 96:12)

"The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs,"
    (Psalm 114:4)

"Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together,"
    (Psalm 98:8)

"The mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands,"
    (Isaiah 55:12)

"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork."
    (Psalm 19:1)
