Alexa Doebele, To Give Next Reformation Presentation

In 2017, Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) will celebrate the 500 year anniversary of the nailing of theses, with which Martin Luther set the Reformation in motion in Wittenberg, Germany on Oct. 31, 1517.

As part of the celebration leading up to the anniversary, CUW is hosting a series of presentations regarding the Reformation.  While many previous speakers have been from outside the University, Dr. Alexa Doebele, CUW Kammerchor director and assistant music professor, will be giving the next presentation on the topic of Lutheran Theological Symbolism in the Music of J.S. Bach.

“My talk will look at several different ways in which Bach infuses his music with Lutheran theology,” said Dr. Doebele. “We will be looking at his choral works (such as the B Minor Mass, the St. Matthew Passion, etc.), his organ works (such as the Orgelbüchlein), and his instrumental works (A Musical Offering).”

The presentation will take place on Tuesday, April 14 at 7 p.m. in the Terrace Room and is open to the public.
