Sarah was on the women's basketball team at CUW and graduated as the Business Student of the Year in 2000. She was only 19 so she went into the Peace Corps. They sent her to Guatemala. Through a Christian community that Sarah connected with in Guatemala City, she met her husband and they got married there. Their family's home language is now Spanish. They lived in Wisconsin for a period and then went down to Guatemala to serve the people again for two years with their daughters. The Salazars have been living in Houston for eight years now. Luis was working at the Guatemalan consulate and Sarah has been teaching. Their daughters went to a Mandarin Immersion elementary school and are now trilingual. With the help of God, they have triumphed over Guillain Barre Syndrome, which Sarah got in 2014. She was almost completely paralyzed and was hospitalized in the Near ICU for seven days. She had to do PT, OT, and speech therapy. After four months of not working, she was able to go back to full-time. This is now part of her testimony and journey as a family as God makes them stronger through their trials. When they look back over their lives, they see Him working and His omnipresent hand with them. They are excited about life and what is still to come. They are grateful for all that they have and embrace every day.

I did my level II clinicals at the UW Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin and coached their club team for the University. I was also an athlete on our collegiate volleyball team with the incredible Coach Janelle, involved in the opportunities CUW provided to grow our faith and service such as mission trips, bible studies, and volunteer opportunities with our incredible faith based staff. Since then, I have passed my boards, the NBCOT giving me the title OTR. I was offered a position at Hand Surgery LTD. which would have never happened without the knowledge and preparation from the CUW OT department. I am so grateful to have been published with my Professor Dr. Borst and Peer Sydney Irish who was also a graduate from CUW for our Critically Appraised Paper (CAP). I continue to serve through many different organizations including coaching, helping those with either physical or psychological disabilities, being nominated as Miss Madison Wisconsin, United States and leading in the church. My future aspirations include continuing to grow as the best clinician I can be through Jesus, taking my certification to be a CHT (Certified Hand Therapist) in a couple of years, and eventually returning to persue my Doctorate in Occupational Therapy. I aspire to one day own my own clinic, keeping the same values CUW has instilled in all of us in order to help my employees and patients grow in mind, body and spirit. I owe every accomplishment and aspiration to Jesus, and thank him for developing Concordia University Wisconsin and its amazing faculty and staff. All glory to God, thank you!

    Updated: May 26, 2017

Since my enriching time at CUW and completing my MCM back in 2007, I’m really excited to share some big updates in my musical world: • I just celebrated 19 years as Minister of Music at North Raleigh United Methodist Church; • I’ve served as a conductor/clinician for more than 100 events throughout the USA and abroad (this summer, I have a third engagement in England; in two weeks, I’m in Toronto; next year is Hong Kong; and continental Europe is in the works for 2019!); • I’ve published more than 50 pieces of music for everything from organ to chorus to handbells to orchestra; • This year marks my tenth season as the conductor of the Tar River Community Chorus (Rocky Mount, NC), as well as my 15th season as Bass Section Leader of the North Carolina Master Chorale. On top of all of these exciting blessings and adventures, on June 11 – my 40th birthday – I’m conducting the New York premiere of my Requiem at Carnegie Hall, with the New England Symphonic Ensemble and a massed chorus of 130 singers (many of whom are from my church choir, and another of whom – Amber Hitchcock – is a fellow CUW grad!)

  • Mize

    Gavin Mize [2007]

    Updated: May 26, 2017

I graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary with my Master of Divinity Degree and was ordained into the office of the Holy Ministry in 2011. I served Divine Savior Lutheran Church in Shepherdsville, Kentucky untilI was Divinely called to Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hickory, North Carolina in 2013. Finishing the year of 2013 and through 2014 my whole world changed very quickly for helots wonderful. I enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry Program at Concordia Theological Seminary (which I am currently working on my dissertation concerning teaching Catechetical Aesthetics), met Ashlee Saleeby who would become my wife in 2015, and we had our first son, Oliver Augustine Mize, on December 22nd 2016. Since the time we learned that Ashlee was pregnant I began searching for tools to use to catechize little Oliver. However, I was very disappointed in the materials for ABC books and other books to grow into. So, I wrote "My Little ABC Liturgy Book," which was published earlier this year. I also have another book being published in a couple of months named, "Beauty and Catechesis" which is foreworded by Prof. John Pless. In "Beauty and Catechesis" we look at works of art, Martin Luther's Small Catechism, and paired with a devotion and prayers for the whole family. I also run a small website devoted to promoting catechetical books for the whole family called I am a very proud Alumnus of Concordia University of Wisconsin! I look forward to returning to CUW for a nostalgic visit to my alma mater! One day, perhaps. Thank you, CUW for guiding me in the way I should go!
