The University recently announced a $50,000 donation from Walgreens to support the purchase of video and technology equipment in the new Applied Patient Care Laboratory of CUW’s School of Pharmacy.

In the July 23 award letter sent to CUW, Walgreens states it recognizes the significant contribution the School of Pharmacy makes in fostering the education development of future leaders. Curt Gielow, executive dean of the School of Pharmacy, understands the grant benefits to not only pharmacy students, but the patients and employers they will eventually serve.

“This gift from Walgreens demonstrates the company’s continued commitment to the education of new pharmacists who have training focused on pharmacist-patient interactions,” says Gielow. “This equipment gives us the latest technology in preparing students for this enhanced professional role,” Gielow adds.

Rural and underserved urban communities across Wisconsin are facing a shortage of inpatient and outpatient pharmacists, according to Gielow. CUW’s School of Pharmacy, which began in 2010, is now only the second pharmacy school in the state of Wisconsin and is helping to fill the need for pharmacists.
