Program Overview

The MPD Pharmaceutical program will provide the additional education and hands-on training that science majors need to secure jobs in the pharmaceutical product development industries; accordingly classes are taught in an applied manner.

Program highlights:
  • Focusing on drug development work, this one-of-a-kind program fills an unmet industry need for highly skilled employees
  • You’ll learn how to develop assays to test potential new API’s, test solubility of lead compounds, develop formulations, or study the stability of compounds of interest
  • Individual product development projects partner you with an industry expert to build on existing
  • ideas or cultivate the student’s own original designs
  • Classes incorporate sustainability concepts, emphasizing optimization of the triple bottom line—people, profit, plant
  • Curriculum blends technical skills with business strategy, market analysis, regulatory/compliance (FDA, ISO), and legal considerations (patent, licensing)

You’ll apprentice with industry partners and learn in state-of-the-art analytical and pilot-scale labs (like the new hybrid classroom/cGMP lab on the Innovation Campus). In addition, you’ll be able to take advantage of networking and collaboration opportunities provided by the Interprofessional Education (IPE) program.

We’re here to teach you the skills you’ll need to pursue a career in pharmaceutical product development. While pursuing your MPD degree at CUW, you’ll get to:

What to Expect

This two year program admits students with any science degree, but requires them to have taken at least two semesters of organic chemistry, one of analytical chemistry and one of instrumental analysis. Students typically take 24 credits per year (12 per semester), for a total of 48 credits to graduate.

Students also write, present and defend a Product Development Project based on work done over the two year period, on a pharmaceutical product development problem. This project is co-mentored by one CUW faculty member and an industry mentor who is actively involved in pharmaceutical product development. Typically our students will also have internships or jobs in the pharmaceutical industry if available.

You’ll learn a lot in this program from conceptualization and design to development and marketing. Professionally, you’ll be prepared to fill an unmet need in the industry. That is, after all, what launching a new product is all about.

State-of-the-Art Laboratories

You’ll have the opportunity to work in analytical, pilot-scale manufacturing, and compounding labs (multiple HPLC’s, a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, 2L jacketed reactor, 500 MHz NMR, Biotage Isolera for flash chomatography, and Biotage microwave reactor).
