Concordia will host a luncheon to acknowledge and show appreciation for County Veteran Service Officers/Organizations (CVSOs), VA personnel, CUW faculty/staff, and others, for all of their work with our student veterans and veterans in general.

Brig. Gen. Joane Mathews is the Assistant Adjutant General for Readiness and Training for the Wisconsin Army National Guard. In this capacity, she assists the Adjutant General and Assistant Adjutant General in sustaining and growing the organizational readiness in the effort to maintain the defense of the Nation and the State of Wisconsin. She ensures mission accomplishment through the enforcement of legal and ethical practices core to our organization’s values, through strategic alignment of readiness metrics, and continuous improvement of our key organizational processes that support the training and readiness of all Wisconsin Army National Guard units.

Brig. Gen. Mathews graduated from Lakeland Union High School, Minocqua, Wis. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Aviation Administration from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks; a masters degree in Military Management from Touro University; and a masters degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. Her military education includes Army Aviation Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Army War College, and Joint Task Force Commander’s Training Course, and the National Security Management Course. She has also completed the initial entry rotary wing course, helicopter instructor course, and maintenance test pilot course.

Brig. Gen. Mathews received her ROTC commission in 1986 as a Second Lieutenant, Aviation Branch. Serving nearly 11 years on active duty, her first assignment was at the U.S. Army Aviation School, Fort Rucker, Ala., where she served as an instructor pilot and platoon commander. Upon transfer to Germany she served as the maintenance platoon leader, company executive officer, company commander, battalion operations officer and battalion personnel officer. Brig. Gen. Mathews participated in Operation Provide Comfort, where she flew numerous sorties in the no-fly zone of northern Iraq. Transferring back to the states, she was assigned as the aviation logistics team leader, Aviation Readiness Division at Fort Sheridan, Ill. Brig Gen. Mathews joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard in 1997 and served in various positions such as battalion supply officer, state family program coordinator, brigade personnel officer, battalion executive officer, and simultaneously as the Deputy Director of Personnel/G1, and Commander of 1-147th Aviation Battalion. After completing the resident Army War College, she served simultaneously as the Director of Personnel/G1 and the Commander for 64th Troop Command. In October 2013, Brig. Gen. Mathews became the Chief of Staff for the Wisconsin Army National Guard. In April 2016, she assumed her current duties as the Assistant Adjutant General for Readiness and Training.

Brig. Gen. Mathews’ military awards include the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (second award), master aviator badge, as well as other federal and state awards.
