International students update

July 13, 2020

Information about travel, housing, health care and visas for International students.

Concordians,

Concordia University’s international community is vital to our University and the uncommon achievement of our mission. For decades, we have welcomed thousands of students from around the world to our campuses, many of whom sacrificed much to come and study as part of our community. The diversity of our global student population enriches the experiences of each and every Concordian.

We are concerned by the updated guidance that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released last week requiring international students to take at least one in-person class to maintain their visa status. This policy stands to negatively impact countless international students not only at CUWAA, but across the nation. The timing of this policy is particularly concerning as it comes in the midst of a global health pandemic when universities need the autonomy and flexibility to adopt nuanced, multi-faceted models of instruction, while preserving the health, safety, and well-being of all our students, faculty, and staff.

To our international student community – please know that we are strongly advocating against this policy and are working closely and collaboratively with higher education colleagues and consortiums across the nation. We are also speaking with our elected representatives to ensure our voice is heard. The Concordia International Center team, led by Assistant Vice President, the Rev. Dr. David Birner, our academic deans, and senior leadership are committed to your academic progress. Given the broad range of courses being offered, both in person and online, we are optimistic we will be able to support our international students to study safely and in person.

Students, we know that you have many time-sensitive decisions. The CIC staff will continue to communicate with you frequently with more details and options.

Please send any questions and concerns to Robin Kuzu, Concordia’s principal designated school official (PDSO) at Robin.Kuzu@cuw.edu. We will do everything possible to ensure your path to graduation remains viable and strong.

We are, as ever, Concordia -- hearts together with you,

Rev. Patrick T. Ferry, Ph.D.
