A pathway to ministry

The LTD isn’t just another credential—it’s a spiritual and vocational journey. Students in the program are formed to become spiritually grounded educators who are doctrinally sound and confident in bringing faith into every subject and classroom experience.

Your pathway to a divine call

Graduates of the LTD are eligible for Synodical Placement—a unique process in which candidates receive their first divine Call to serve in an LCMS school. This is more than a job offer; it’s a sacred recognition of teaching as a form of Gospel-centered ministry. Upon accepting their first divine Call, LTD graduates are officially recognized as Commissioned Ministers of the Gospel—a distinct and honored role within the LCMS.

Colloquy

If you’re a teacher who is currently serving in a Lutheran school, are a member of an LCMS church, and have already earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) Teacher Colloquy program is probably for you.

What sets the LTD apart?

Every Concordia student takes 9 credits of theology coursework as part of their degree. The Lutheran Teacher Diploma builds on that foundation—just 9 additional credits unlock the LTD designation and a pathway to commissioned ministry. That’s only three more courses—but a life-changing difference for those called to serve the church through teaching.

Scholarship opportunity

The Forward in Faith Lutheran Teacher Scholarship is a merit scholarship given to students who intend to enroll in the CUW Lutheran Teacher Diploma (LTD) program and eventually teach in a Lutheran school (LCMS).

Dr. Juergensen

“There is a great need for teachers in our Lutheran schools, and our candidates are highly sought after. It’s a joy to help them begin their ministry journey.”

— Dr. Jim Juergensen

Theological and vocational formation

LTD students are immersed in Scripture, Lutheran doctrine, and a Christ-centered worldview that shapes every part of their teaching. Through six rich, faith-forming courses, taught in partnership between the Theology and Education departments, students explore:

  • Old Testament
  • New Testament
  • Biblical Theology
  • Lutheran Confessions
  • Faith and Life Elective
  • Teaching the Faith
Rev. Dr. German

“Students explore the mystery and majesty of God’s interaction with humanity in Christ Jesus. Theological study isn’t just academic—it’s formational.”

— Rev. Dr. Brian German

Faith integration in every subject

A signature assignment in the Teaching the Faith class challenges candidates to create 25 faith-integrated lesson ideas across five content areas—giving them hands-on experience in applying a Christ-centered lens to their future classrooms.

LTD students also teach faith lessons in local Lutheran schools, where they practice sharing the Gospel, assessing student understanding, and growing in their own witness.

Our LTD graduates are known for being:

  • Spiritually grounded
  • Academically prepared
  • Mission-minded servant leaders
Dr. Alles

“These teacher candidates know the true Teacher is the Holy Spirit, who guides children in the one true faith.”

— Dr. Brad Alles

Frequently asked questions

What is a Call, and how is it different from a job offer?

A Call is a divine designation issued by a Lutheran school after prayer and consultation, recognizing the teacher as a church worker. Unlike a typical job offer, a Call is affirmed by the LCMS and places the recipient on the official roster of Commissioned Ministers.

Do I need to be Lutheran to pursue the LTD?

Yes. LTD candidates must be confirmed and active members of a Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) congregation to ensure theological alignment and prepare for Synodical Placement.

Can I earn the LTD in an online or accelerated program?

Absolutely! The LTD is fully integrated into our online and accelerated pathways at both CUW and CUAA. No matter your format, you can prepare for Lutheran school ministry.

What if I didn’t start with the LTD in mind—can I still add it?

Yes! Even if you’ve already started your coursework, we’ll help you adjust your schedule to include the additional theology courses needed for the LTD.

How does Synodical Placement work after graduation?

Our team walks with you through the placement process. If you're not ready to accept a Call immediately, we’ll support you when the time is right. Future Calls are managed through your LCMS district.

Where can I serve with the LTD?

LTD graduates can teach in LCMS schools from early childhood through high school, depending on their license area. The LCMS network includes schools across the country and around the globe.

Can I teach in a public school with the LTD?

Yes. Your state teaching license is fully valid in public schools. While you wouldn't remain on the LCMS roster while teaching in a public setting, you could be eligible for a Call in the future.

What if I’m still discerning full-time church work?

That’s perfectly okay. Concordia is here to mentor you as you explore your calling. Whether you pursue full-time church work now or later, you’ll be part of a community that supports your spiritual and vocational growth.

I’ve already earned my bachelor’s degree; can I still earn my LTD?

No. If you’re a teacher who is currently serving in a Lutheran school, are a member of an LCMS church, and have already earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, check out the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) Teacher Colloquy program.
